Vultr is planning to deploy a 20MW cluster of AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs in Chennai, India, a move the privately held cloud provider says will constitute the country's largest AMD Instinct deployment to date. The project would give Vultr a second large-scale AMD cluster, following a similar deployment in Springfield, Ohio, and underscores the company's push to bring high-performance AI compute closer to enterprise customers in key markets.
The announcement comes as demand for localized AI infrastructure accelerates across India, where enterprises increasingly require in-country capacity to satisfy data sovereignty, data residency, and latency requirements. Vultr did not disclose which data center facility will host the capacity, though operators with a presence in the Chennai area include Digital Realty, Equinix, Sify Technologies, CtrlS, NTT Data, CapitaLand, and Iron Mountain.
The AMD Instinct MI355X is built on the 4th Gen AMD CDNA architecture and features 288GB of HBM3E memory, 8TBps of bandwidth, and support for advanced data types including FP6 and FP4, capabilities designed to accelerate AI training, inference, and scientific simulation workloads. J.J. Kardwell, CEO of Vultr, said enterprises deploying AI at scale need infrastructure they can access locally to meet data sovereignty, data residency, and latency requirements, adding that the Chennai supercluster, powered by AMD MI355X GPUs, gives organizations in India the capacity to train, fine-tune, and run inference on in-country infrastructure.
Jaya Jagadish, country head and SVP of engineering at AMD India, said India has the talent and ideas to build the next generation of AI, and that access to compute at this scale will help turn more of those ideas into reality. Jagadish added that the collaboration with Vultr expands access to AMD Instinct compute in India, backed by the AMD ROCm open software ecosystem, giving researchers, startups, and enterprises greater choice and flexibility in how they develop and deploy AI.
The Chennai deployment extends an ongoing relationship between Vultr and AMD. The cloud provider has previously deployed the chip firm's MI325X and MI355X GPUs, with the latter becoming available in September 2025, and in July 2026 added the MI455X GPUs to its platform, with plans to expand that capacity in 2027. Vultr currently operates 34 global cloud data center regions, having opened a Mumbai cloud region in 2022, with the Chennai region launching earlier this week. The buildout reflects a broader trend among cloud providers to anchor AI capacity in strategic regional hubs, and if realized at full scale, the 20MW Chennai cluster would significantly deepen India's domestic GPU capacity for AI training and inference.
