Vantage Signs 1GW Solid-State Transformer Supply Deal with Heron Power

By: IDCNOVARegion: North America
Vantage Data Centers has signed a supply agreement with Heron Power, a U.S.-based solid-state transformer manufacturer, securing more than 1GW of the company's Heron Link SST units for deployment across its hyperscale data center portfolio. The deal represents one of the largest known commitments for solid-state transformer technology in the data center sector and underscores the industry's push to redesign electrical architectures for increasingly power-hungry AI workloads.

The agreement is expected to support Vantage's transition to deploying 800 VDC racks across its facilities. Heron's Heron Link SST is designed to address the challenges posed by AI racks, which operate at significantly higher densities and exhibit more variable loads than traditional computing equipment. The system achieves this through integrated energy storage, a reduced number of conversion stages, and a simplified path from the grid to the rack. According to the companies, the Heron Link targets more than 98.5 percent efficiency from medium voltage to 800VDC, enabling faster time to power, lower infrastructure requirements, and greater energy flexibility.

The Heron Link is a 5MW modular megawatt power converter built on wide-bandgap semiconductors. Heron claims the product offers high power density and ease of maintenance, delivering greater reliability and lower costs for renewable energy storage and data center developers. "Our customers need a faster and more efficient way to deploy increasingly power-dense and flexible AI infrastructure," said Curtis Aubry, vice president of global product strategy at Vantage. "By simplifying the electrical architecture and integrating power conversion, energy storage and compute more effectively, we can help reduce deployment complexity, improve efficiency and accelerate our customers' speed to capacity." Drew Baglino, founder and CEO of Heron Power, added that the partnership will move 800 VDC "from a reference architecture concept to a repeatable, deployed platform, delivering power from grid to rack in an integrated system."

Heron Power was founded in 2024 by former Tesla senior executive Drew Baglino and is headquartered in Scotts Valley, California. In August, the company announced the selection of Morgan Hill, California, as the site of its first large-scale factory, which is expected to manufacture up to 10,000 Heron Links annually, representing 40GW of capacity on an annual basis. The manufacturing facility selection followed the close of Heron's Series B funding round earlier this year, which raised $140 million and brought total funding to date to $183 million. The company had previously closed its Series A round in May. Heron has already partnered with data center firms to deploy its technology, including a Letter of Intent signed last June with Crusoe to supply power converter technology for the Stargate data center campus in Texas.

The deal reflects a broader industry shift toward higher-voltage direct current architectures as operators seek to improve efficiency and reduce the complexity of delivering power to dense AI computing environments. Solid-state transformer technology, which replaces conventional iron-and-copper transformers with semiconductor-based conversion, is emerging as a key enabler for 800 VDC deployment. For Vantage, the agreement secures a critical supply chain component as it scales its hyperscale portfolio to meet surging demand for AI-ready capacity. For Heron, the Vantage commitment provides a anchor customer as it ramps up manufacturing and seeks to establish its platform as a standard for next-generation data center power delivery.
