Timor-Leste has officially launched commercial operations of its first international subsea cable, marking a significant milestone for the Southeast Asian nation's digital connectivity. The activation, which took place in late July, means the country is no longer solely dependent on satellite-based communications systems for international data traffic.
The project is operated by Cabos de Timor-Leste, the company responsible for the Timor-Leste South Submarine Cable System (TLSSC). The TLSSC connects the capital city of Dili to the North-West Cable System, which maintains cable landing stations in Darwin and Wurrumiyangi, Australia. This interconnection establishes a direct and reliable fiber-optic link between Timor-Leste and the global internet backbone, a critical upgrade for a country that has historically relied on satellite connectivity.
The cable system first landed in Timor-Leste in June 2024. It was laid by France's Alcatel Submarine Networks and spans 607 kilometers (377 miles), offering a capacity of 27bps and equipped with seven repeaters to maintain signal integrity across the route. The Dili landing station was constructed by Australia's DXN, underscoring the collaborative international effort behind the infrastructure project.
The significance of this launch extends beyond basic connectivity. For Timor-Leste, a nation positioned on the eastern half of the island of Timor between Indonesia and northern Australia, the new cable is expected to enhance access to cloud services, support the growth of local data center capacity, and improve the resilience of its communications networks.
