Tencent Cloud to Launch New Cloud Region in Malaysia with Three Availability Zones

Tencent Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Chinese technology giant Tencent, has announced plans to establish a new cloud region in Malaysia, marking a significant step in its Southeast Asia expansion strategy. The new region, set to be located in Johor, will comprise up to three availability zones, with two of them expected to go live this week, according to a report from The Edge Malaysia.

The move comes as part of Tencent Cloud's broader global infrastructure buildout, adding to its existing network of 23 cloud regions and 66 availability zones worldwide. Most of Tencent's current footprint is concentrated in Asia, but the company also operates regions in North America, including Silicon Valley, Virginia, and Toronto, as well as in Frankfurt, Europe, and São Paulo, South America. The Malaysia region is designed to serve as a critical node in the company's global architecture, enabling enterprises to scale locally and expand regionally while accelerating AI-driven innovation.

"Malaysia remains a key market in Tencent Cloud's growth strategy across Asia," said Bluefin Jiannan Zhao, vice president of Tencent Cloud and managing director of Tencent Cloud International for Asia Pacific. "The new Cloud Region in Malaysia will serve as a critical node within our global infrastructure, enabling enterprises to scale locally, expand regionally, and accelerate their AI-driven innovation. Through this investment, we aim to deepen our support for Malaysia's digital transformation journey and contribute to the continued growth of its AI ecosystem."

The announcement follows a period of heightened activity in Malaysia's cloud and data center sector. In June 2026, Alibaba Cloud, a direct competitor, launched its own cloud region in Johor, adding to its earlier presence in Kuala Lumpur, which it established in October 2017 as the first global public cloud platform to host infrastructure in the country. This latest move by Tencent Cloud intensifies competition among hyperscale providers vying for a share of Malaysia's rapidly digitizing economy.

Nucky Fang, general manager of Tencent Cloud International & Tencent Cloud Malaysia, highlighted the growing demand for AI-enabled solutions among local enterprises. "As Malaysian enterprises accelerate their digital transformation, they increasingly want to deploy AI to address real business needs and create measurable value," Fang said. "By combining local cloud infrastructure with Tencent Cloud's AI capabilities and industry expertise, we will be able to work more closely with customers and partners to develop secure, reliable, and scalable solutions tailored to their evolving needs."

The expansion aligns with Tencent Cloud's global ambitions, which were outlined earlier this year by CEO Dowson Tong. In early 2026, Tong noted that the company was actively seeking to expand its global footprint, identifying the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Europe as key regions for adding further availability zones. The Malaysia launch represents a concrete step in that direction, reinforcing Tencent Cloud's commitment to supporting digital transformation across Asia and beyond.
