Tencent Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Chinese technology conglomerate Tencent, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Malaysian telecommunications operator U Mobile to jointly develop and deploy 5G and artificial intelligence solutions for enterprises in Malaysia, the two companies announced Monday.
The partnership marks Tencent Cloud's first AI-focused collaboration with a Malaysian telecommunications company, underscoring the growing convergence of cloud computing, next-generation connectivity, and artificial intelligence across Southeast Asia's enterprise technology landscape. Under the agreement, Tencent Cloud will integrate its AI and cloud service portfolio with U Mobile's 5G network infrastructure and its Enterprise Innovation Platform to develop, test, and demonstrate applications tailored for enterprises and smaller businesses. Successful use cases are expected to progress from proof-of-concept stages to pilot deployments and eventual commercial launch, though no financial terms of the agreement were disclosed.
U Mobile, which entered Malaysia's telecommunications market as its newest 5G network operator, launched its ULTRA5G service in 2025 and opened the Enterprise Innovation Platform earlier this year as a dedicated testing ground for 5G and AI projects. The platform is designed to allow businesses, startups, developers, and academic institutions to experiment with and validate next-generation applications in a controlled environment before committing to full-scale deployment.
Poshu Yeung, senior vice president of Tencent Cloud and head of its international business, said the partnership can help enterprises and developers build 5G and AI applications that support Malaysia's broader digital transformation agenda. Woon Ooi Yuen, U Mobile's chief technology officer, said the collaboration can translate ideas into practical solutions through the platform's develop-test-demonstrate approach, which is structured to reduce the time and risk associated with bringing new technologies to market.
Beyond technology development, the two companies said they would jointly run workshops, demonstrations, and pilot showcases involving businesses, startups, developers, and universities. They will also share expertise in areas including 5G deployment, AI model development, system integration, and cybersecurity, aiming to build a local talent and technology ecosystem around enterprise-grade 5G and AI applications.
The collaboration reflects a broader trend in Southeast Asia, where telecommunications operators and cloud service providers are increasingly joining forces to capture enterprise demand for integrated connectivity and AI capabilities. For Tencent Cloud, the deal represents a further push into international markets as it seeks to diversify beyond its home market of China and establish a stronger presence in the fast-growing digital economies of Southeast Asia.
