Telxius, a global telecommunications infrastructure provider, has announced plans to construct a new carrier-neutral cable landing station (CLS) and edge data center in Cancún, Mexico. The project is designed to consolidate submarine connectivity, terrestrial networks, and computing capacity into a single integrated infrastructure hub, positioning the site as a strategic gateway for digital traffic across the Caribbean and the Americas.
The facility will serve as the landing point for the Tikal submarine cable system, which will connect Puerto Barrios, Guatemala, with Boca Raton, Florida. Tikal, initially announced in January 2023 as a joint venture between Telxius and América Móvil, is scheduled to enter service in the first half of 2027. According to the company, the system will deliver an estimated initial capacity of 380Tbps on its main backbone, offering a new high-capacity route between the Caribbean and the United States.
The cable is expected to enhance network diversity by providing an alternative path for international traffic, reducing reliance on existing routes. Beyond the submarine link, the Cancún infrastructure will also offer a new terrestrial route to Santiago de Querétaro, one of Mexico’s most significant data center markets, enabling improved connectivity for enterprise and cloud customers in the region.
In addition to the cable landing station, the Cancún site will host an edge data center engineered for data-intensive and latency-sensitive workloads. The facility is designed to meet Tier III standards and will incorporate N+1 and 2N redundancy configurations across critical power and cooling systems, complemented by robust physical and network security measures.
The new gateway joins Telxius’s existing regional infrastructure, including the SAm-1 and PCCS submarine cable systems, as well as the Punta Cana Landing Gateway in the Dominican Republic. This expansion underscores the company’s broader strategy to strengthen connectivity hubs across Latin America and the Caribbean.

The development comes as demand for edge computing and resilient international bandwidth continues to rise across Latin America, driven by cloud adoption, streaming services, and the expansion of AI-enabled applications. By integrating cable infrastructure with on-site data processing capabilities, Telxius aims to offer a compelling value proposition for content providers, enterprises, and telecommunications operators seeking efficient, secure, and low-latency connectivity in the region.
