Tata Communications to Invest $450M in 10,000km AI-Ready Fiber Network Across India

By: IDCNOVARegion: South Asia
Tata Communications has unveiled plans to invest approximately $450 million in building roughly 10,000 kilometers of long-haul, AI-ready fiber across India, a move aimed at underpinning the country's rapidly expanding data center industry and meeting the connectivity demands of next-generation artificial intelligence workloads.

The announcement underscores the growing urgency among telecom operators and infrastructure providers to scale up high-capacity networks as hyperscale cloud providers, neocloud operators and AI-focused enterprises race to deploy compute-intensive applications that require ultra-low-latency and high-bandwidth connectivity between data center clusters. India has emerged as a key battleground for this buildout, with global technology firms and domestic operators alike committing billions of dollars to digital infrastructure.

Tata Communications has earmarked between $400 million and $450 million for the fiber buildout, which the company said will support demand from hyperscale and neocloud providers, AI workloads, digital-native businesses, Global Capability Centers, enterprises and emerging cloud platforms. The network is expected to rank among India's largest AI-ready connectivity systems once completed.

The deployment will proceed in three phases. The first phase will focus on the Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai corridor, which the company described as one of India's most important AI and hyperscale growth routes. Subsequent phases will extend connectivity into emerging East Coast and Western India data center ecosystems, including Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar, Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) City and other strategic locations.

By linking these routes and data center clusters with international cable landing stations, Tata Communications aims to enable seamless connectivity between India and major global AI hubs. The planned system will be integrated into the company's existing global network backbone, which spans 500,000 kilometers of subsea optical fiber and 200,000 kilometers of terrestrial fiber.

"With our planned investments, we are building on our existing strengths to create one of the most comprehensive data center connectivity platforms in the market, positioning us to capture this significant growth opportunity," said Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Communications. "As we scale, a growing proportion of our expansion is being driven by anchor customer commitments and contracted demand, providing a strong foundation for sustainable growth, efficient capital deployment and long-term value creation."

The investment reflects a broader industry trend in which connectivity infrastructure is increasingly being designed specifically for AI workloads, rather than serving as general-purpose bandwidth. As AI models grow in complexity and data center operators cluster facilities to achieve scale, the fiber routes that connect these sites are becoming critical determinants of performance. Tata Communications' phased approach, anchored by contracted demand from anchor customers, signals a disciplined capital strategy that could serve as a template for other operators navigating the capital-intensive nature of AI infrastructure buildouts.
