Soluna, a developer specializing in AI and cryptocurrency data centers powered by renewable energy, has acquired a 397-acre plot in Briscoe County, Texas, for its planned Project Dorothy 3 campus. The site is expected to support up to 300MW of capacity and sits adjacent to the company's existing Dorothy 1 and 2 projects, creating a contiguous development footprint in the region.
The new campus will be powered through renewable energy sources, leveraging its proximity to the 150MW Briscoe onshore wind farm, which Soluna purchased in April. According to the company, the wind farm's substation is located directly across from the acquired property, enabling Dorothy 3 to access power behind the meter without relying on broader grid interconnection timelines.
John Belizaire, CEO of Soluna, emphasized the strategic value of land ownership in accelerating customer deployments. "Customers evaluating AI sites want to know how quickly we can get them to power," he said. "Owning this land takes one more variable out of that answer. Dorothy 3 is a site we control end to end, and that is what turns a development project into something a customer can plan around."
Soluna, originally a cryptocurrency mining firm that pivoted to renewable-powered data center development, currently operates 192MW of capacity and has 11 data center sites in various stages of development. Its portfolio includes the 187MW Project Rosa site in Texas, the 50MW Dorothy I A and B and 48MW Dorothy II projects also in Texas, the 25MW Project Sophie data center in Kentucky, and the 2MW Grace site in Texas.
The acquisition reflects a broader trend among data center developers to secure land and power assets early in the project lifecycle, particularly as AI workloads drive demand for large-scale, energy-intensive facilities. By controlling both the real estate and the renewable generation source, Soluna aims to offer customers a streamlined path to power, reducing the uncertainty that often complicates site selection and development timelines.
