Singapore's DayOne Data Secures $415M Green Loan for Hydrogen-Powered Data Center

By: IDCNOVARegion: Southeast Asia
DayOne Data Centers, a Singapore-headquartered digital infrastructure company, has secured a four-year green loan of S$530 million ($415 million) from three Singapore banks—DBS, OCBC, and UOB—to finance the construction of its first data center in the country. The facility, located in the western part of Singapore, broke ground in July 2025 and is expected to commence operations in the first quarter of 2027.

The loan, structured under the Green Loan Principles—an international framework for environmentally focused lending—marks a significant step toward sustainable digital infrastructure in the region. According to a statement released by DBS on Tuesday, the 20-MW facility could become Singapore's first data center to generate power on site using hydrogen fuel cells, a pioneering approach in the city-state's data center industry.

DBS, OCBC, and UOB acted as joint mandated lead arrangers, bookrunners, and green-loan coordinators, with DBS also serving as facility and security agent. The data center will incorporate on-site solid oxide fuel cell power generation as a proof-of-concept for hydrogen-based energy, a technology that DayOne and the banks said would be a first for Singapore. In addition, the facility will feature vertical building-integrated solar panels and a combination of air and liquid cooling systems to enhance energy efficiency.

The financing comes at a time when demand for digital infrastructure is accelerating, driven by the rapid growth of AI and cloud computing, which have significantly increased energy consumption across the region. Han Kwee Juan, group head of institutional banking at DBS, noted that the financing can support the development of more energy-efficient facilities, aligning with the broader industry shift toward sustainable operations. Elaine Lam, head of global corporate banking at OCBC, added that innovative energy solutions will play an increasingly important role in supporting digital infrastructure sustainably.

Founded in 2022, DayOne Data Centers operates facilities across Asia and Europe, with a presence in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Finland, and Spain. This latest green loan underscores the company's commitment to expanding its footprint while prioritizing environmental responsibility, setting a benchmark for future data center projects in the region.
