Russia Strikes Kyivstar Headquarters and Data Centers in Escalating Campaign Against Ukraine's Communications Infrastructure

Russia has intensified its bombardment of Ukraine's communications infrastructure, striking the Kyiv headquarters of Kyivstar, the country's largest mobile operator, and damaging multiple data centers in an escalating campaign that has disrupted internet access for roughly 100,000 households and injured civilians, according to Ukrainian officials and the company.

Kyivstar confirmed to Interfax Ukraine that its headquarters building in the capital was hit in a Russian attack on Sunday. The company said no personnel were injured in the strike. Russia's Defense Ministry separately claimed on Sunday that it had struck a data center belonging to Vodafone Ukraine, the country's second-largest telecom operator, which has not yet responded to the claim.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces carried out two airstrikes on a data center in Kyiv on Sunday morning, injuring two children and one adult. Ukraine's Digital Ministry reported that Moscow's forces have conducted a concentrated series of attacks on internet service providers' data centers over the past week, cutting internet access for approximately 100,000 households across Kyiv and the surrounding region.

The targeting of critical communications nodes drew sharp condemnation from Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who wrote on social media platform X that Russia is deliberately striking Ukraine's main data centers in an attempt to sever the flow of information. He stressed that the timely dissemination of missile and drone threat alerts is a matter of life and death for civilians, making the uninterrupted operation of communications systems essential.

The strikes mark a significant escalation in Russia's efforts to degrade Ukraine's digital resilience, raising concerns about the vulnerability of civilian telecommunications networks in modern warfare. The targeting of commercial data centers — facilities that underpin both consumer connectivity and emergency alert systems — underscores the growing strategic importance of digital infrastructure as both a civilian lifeline and a military objective.
