Pakistani telecom operator Jazz has expanded its 5G network to 1,000 live sites, claiming to be the first operator in the country to reach the milestone just months after launching the service. The achievement marks a significant step in the country's telecommunications landscape, where 5G adoption is still in its early stages and network coverage remains a key competitive differentiator.
Jazz, a subsidiary of Veon, launched its 5G network in March after securing the necessary operating license. The initial rollout covered major urban centers including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, and Faisalabad. Since then, the operator has extended coverage across these markets and added Sialkot and Gujranwala to its 5G footprint.
The company now plans to scale its network to 2,500 5G sites by the end of this year, a move that would significantly deepen coverage in existing markets while potentially opening new ones. The expansion reflects an aggressive build-out pace aimed at capturing early-mover advantage in Pakistan's nascent 5G market.
"Reaching 1,000 5G sites at this pace reflects our determination to bring the benefits of 5G to more Pakistanis, faster," said Kazim Mujtaba, president of Jazz GSM. "As we scale to 2,500 sites by year-end, our focus is on delivering a better digital experience through greater capacity, faster speeds and more reliable connectivity, while enabling new services and use cases as 5G adoption grows."
Jazz launched its network at the same time as domestic rival Zong, intensifying competition in the market. Pakistan's government had previously set a target to launch 5G services last summer, though that timeline slipped. The current rollout by Jazz and Zong signals a new phase of telecom infrastructure investment in the country, with implications for mobile broadband quality, enterprise connectivity, and the broader digital economy.
Industry observers note that the pace of 5G deployment in Pakistan will be closely watched, as network density and spectrum efficiency will determine service quality and operator profitability in the coming years. Jazz's aggressive expansion targets suggest a strategy focused on building a strong coverage advantage early, which could influence market share dynamics as 5G-enabled devices become more affordable and consumer adoption accelerates.
