European data center operator NorthC has commenced preparatory construction work on a new facility in Frankfurt, Germany, marking the latest phase of its expanding German footprint. The company announced on LinkedIn this week that groundwork has begun at Mainzer Landstraße 695 in the western part of the city, where the new FRA01 data center will be built.
The facility is designed to deliver 6MW of capacity, with the first phase scheduled to go live in January 2028. The project represents a significant addition to NorthC's German portfolio and underscores the operator's commitment to scaling its presence in one of Europe's most critical data center markets.
NorthC said it currently has three facilities in development around Frankfurt, alongside its operational Frankfurt 3 site, which was acquired from Colt. Among the pipeline projects is Frankfurt 2, planned for Dornhofstraße 14 in Neu-Isenburg, approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) south of Frankfurt. The site, which currently houses industrial warehouse space, was acquired from family office Lugman Capital earlier this year, with NorthC planning a 4.5MW data center there.
The company's expansion in Germany follows a series of strategic moves. NorthC was formed in 2019 through the merger of Dutch data center firms TDCG and NLDC, originally a subsidiary of Dutch telecoms company KPN. Antin Infrastructure Partners acquired the company in December 2025. After entering the German market via the acquisition of IP Exchange in 2022, NorthC first announced plans to develop a 5MW data center in Frankfurt in January 2024, followed by a second Frankfurt project in December 2024 offering 1.5MW at launch and 10.5MW at full build-out.
The 900kW Frankfurt 3 facility, located at Rüsselsheimer Straße 22, is a former CenturyLink/Lumen site that NorthC took over when it acquired a number of European facilities from Colt last year. Colt had acquired Lumen's EMEA operations in 2023. Across Germany, NorthC operates data centers in Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Nuremberg, and Munich.
The Frankfurt market remains one of Europe's largest and most competitive data center hubs, driven by demand from cloud providers, enterprises, and AI workloads. NorthC's continued investment in the region signals confidence in sustained colocation demand in Germany, even as power availability and land constraints increasingly shape development strategies across the Frankfurt metro area.
