NorthC Breaks Ground on 4.5MW Data Center in Geneva, Switzerland

By: IDCNOVARegion: Europe
European data center operator NorthC has begun construction on a new modular facility in Geneva, Switzerland, marking another step in the company's expansion across the DACH region. The project, first announced in January 2026, represents a significant addition to NorthC's growing Swiss portfolio and underscores the company's commitment to supporting Switzerland's digital infrastructure needs.

The facility, located at Rte du Nant-d'Avril 152 in Meyrin, will deliver 4.5MW of IT capacity across 5,400 square meters (58,125 square feet), with capacity rolled out in increments of 1.5MW. Construction is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2028, with the first phase due to go live that year. In a LinkedIn post this week, the company described the groundbreaking as "a milestone for NorthC and another significant step in our growth in the DACH region," thanking HIAG, its other partners, and local authorities for making the moment possible.

The new Geneva facility will incorporate a waterless cooling system and support direct-to-chip liquid cooling, reflecting NorthC's focus on sustainable operations. Backup generators will run on HVO fuel instead of diesel, and waste heat from the facility will be made available for local heating networks. Urs Bürgisser, NorthC's managing director for Switzerland, said he was "proud to have been part of the groundbreaking ceremony for our new Geneva data center in Meyrin last week," calling it "an exciting milestone and another step forward for NorthC in supporting Switzerland's digital future."

NorthC was formed in 2019 through the merger of Dutch data center firms TDCG and NLDC, originally a subsidiary of Dutch telecoms company KPN. Antin Infrastructure Partners acquired the company in December 2025. NorthC currently operates more than a dozen data centers across the Netherlands, eight in Germany, and four in Switzerland, with additional projects in development across all three markets. The company entered Switzerland in 2022 with the acquisition of Netrics, taking over three data centers—two in Münchenstein near Basel and one in Biel—with a total floor space of 13,000 square meters (140,000 square feet) and more than 7.5MW of capacity. A year later, it acquired a 1.8MW facility outside Zurich from IT services firm Kyndryl in a sale-leaseback deal.

The Geneva groundbreaking follows NorthC's announcement in September 2025 of plans for a new facility in Basel, whose first phase is set to launch in mid-2027 with 5.5MW across 2,500 square meters (26,910 square feet). The company is also expanding its Biel data center, adding a further 2MW of capacity in partnership with Edico Engineering and Tri-Air, with a focus on expanding cooling supply and UPS systems as well as reviewing emergency power systems. The Biel facility, built in 2018, was acquired by Netrics in early 2021, with Netrics already serving as anchor tenant at the 3,000-square-meter (32,200-square-foot), 4MW site. The Geneva project adds to a broader wave of data center construction across Europe as demand for digital infrastructure continues to rise.
