NVIDIA is orchestrating a major expansion of AI computing capacity across Australia, partnering with eight local cloud and infrastructure providers to develop up to 2 gigawatts of AI factory capacity by 2027. The initiative, announced on September 9, 2026, brings together Firmus, Sharon AI, IREN, Megaport, ResetData, CDC, NEXTDC and AirTrunk, each of which will operate NVIDIA DSX-based AI factories while NVIDIA supplies the full-stack platform encompassing accelerated computing, networking, software and ecosystem support.
The scope of the buildout underscores the accelerating global race to construct large-scale AI infrastructure, as demand for high-performance computing surges across industries. NVIDIA describes its DSX platform as a full-stack AI factory solution spanning facilities infrastructure, computing, networking, software and reference designs, engineered to help operators serve a broad range of workloads, improve performance and utilization, and extend the useful life of their assets. The company cited Australia's sustainable energy and digital infrastructure, deep technology talent and reputation as a trusted global economic partner as key foundations for the expansion.
"AI factories turn energy into intelligence — the essential resource of the AI economy," said Raj Mirpuri, vice president of global AI clouds and infrastructure ecosystem at NVIDIA. Mirpuri characterized DSX-based AI factories as a new investable asset class and said the Australian partnerships will allow the infrastructure to support multiple generations of NVIDIA compute while expanding local access to accelerated computing and NVIDIA Nemotron open models.
Each partner is pursuing a distinct facet of the buildout. Firmus is expanding its Project Southgate initiative, developing NVIDIA-powered AI factories designed to support hyperscale and AI-native demand across Australia and Asia-Pacific. Cofounder and co-CEO Oliver Curtis described Project Southgate as a tangible commitment to building Australia's AI future, saying the factories will give Australian businesses, researchers and innovators access to computing capacity at home while positioning the country to meet growing AI demand across Asia-Pacific.
Sharon AI is deploying up to 68,000 NVIDIA GPUs connected with NVIDIA Quantum InfiniBand and NVIDIA Spectrum-X Ethernet networking, using the DSX platform to support startups, enterprises and research organizations. Cofounder and CEO James Manning said building on DSX equips Sharon AI to bring gigawatt-scale AI factories to Australian enterprises, researchers, government and AI-native companies.
IREN is combining NVIDIA's DSX AI factory architecture with its own expertise across power, land, data centers, GPU deployment and infrastructure operations. Cofounder and co-CEO Daniel Roberts said pairing IREN's vertically integrated platform with the DSX reference architecture provides a repeatable blueprint to bring capacity online at scale, and that IREN is applying the blueprint across its development portfolio, including its 800-megawatt Bundey campus in South Australia.
Megaport is expanding access to NVIDIA accelerated computing through its wholly owned subsidiary Latitude.sh to support the inference needs of AI enterprises. According to the announcement, combining the Latitude.sh compute platform with Megaport's global software-defined network brings AI processing closer to users, reducing latency and improving responsiveness. CEO Michael Reid said the investments help Australian organizations build and deploy AI locally and scale globally through Megaport's worldwide platform.
ResetData is providing NVIDIA accelerated computing through its AI cloud platform for enterprise, government and research customers that require high-performance compute and Australian data residency. Joint CEO Marcel Zalloua cited the company's work with ProCan at the Children's Medical Research Institute and said ResetData is partnering with NVIDIA to develop sovereign, purpose-built infrastructure solutions for Australian businesses and researchers.
CDC has developed AI-ready data center infrastructure across Australia and New Zealand for high-density AI and high-performance computing workloads, with facilities featuring direct liquid-to-chip cooling designed to support NVIDIA accelerated computing infrastructure at scale. Founder and CEO Greg Boorer said CDC operates more than 550 megawatts of capacity across the two countries, with a further 800 megawatts under construction, and that its facilities run on 100% renewable electricity and use zero-water advanced cooling technologies certified for NVIDIA accelerated computing infrastructure.
NEXTDC has developed AI-ready data center infrastructure designed to support high-density AI factories, providing the power, cooling, connectivity and physical infrastructure required to deploy increasingly compute-intensive AI systems. Chief customer and commercial officer David Dzienciol said NEXTDC operates and continues to develop liquid-cooled, high-density infrastructure, including AI factories built on NVIDIA DSX and interconnected with the world's leading cloud platforms.
AirTrunk is expanding AI-ready powered shells across the region, including direct-to-chip liquid-cooling infrastructure designed to support high-density AI workloads. Chief customer and innovation officer Damien Spillane said AI is reshaping hyperscale infrastructure in Australia, driving new approaches to location, capacity, cooling, power and connectivity.
Alongside the infrastructure expansion, NVIDIA said broader access to accelerated computing and its Nemotron open models will enable Australian organizations to develop locally relevant models, applications and agents. Organizations including Heidi and Atlassian are already using NVIDIA Nemotron open models, datasets and tools to build and customize AI across language, reasoning, speech and multimodal applications. Heidi combines NVIDIA Nemotron models with its specialized clinical knowledge to build voice-driven AI for healthcare, with cofounder and chief technology officer Yu Liu saying that "NVIDIA Nemotron 3 Ultra gives us the flexibility to build and post-train models for the real complexity of healthcare." Atlassian is advancing semantic search in Rovo with NVIDIA AI, work that Guihong Cao, head of engineering for Rovo + AI at Atlassian, described as making enterprise search more intelligent, context-aware and capable of surfacing more relevant insights across complex data and workflows.
NVIDIA said the combined efforts connect AI infrastructure with the open models and software that turn computing capacity into applications, enabling innovators across research, industry and the public sector to build and scale AI in Australia.
