Meta to Expand Eagle Mountain Data Center Campus in Utah With Over $3 Billion Investment

Meta is expanding its data center campus in Eagle Mountain, Utah, marking the fourth major buildout at the site as the social media giant continues to scale its computing infrastructure to support artificial intelligence and cloud workloads.

The company said the new buildings will feature closed-loop liquid cooling systems combined with dry cooling technology, a design choice that reflects the industry's growing focus on reducing water consumption at large-scale data center facilities. Full technical details of the expansion have not been disclosed.

Meta said the expansion will push its total investment in Utah beyond $3 billion. The project is expected to support more than 1,200 construction workers at peak construction and create more than 300 permanent jobs at the data center once completed.

"With this expansion, we are increasing our investment in Utah to more than $3 billion and will support more than 1,200 construction workers at the peak of construction, as well as more than 300 jobs at the data center once completed," the company said.

The Eagle Mountain campus, located outside Salt Lake City, broke ground in 2018 and went live in 2021. Meta initially developed a $750 million, 1 million-square-foot facility before announcing a 500,000-square-foot expansion in 2019, a further 900,000-square-foot addition in 2021, and two additional buildings totaling 2 million square feet in 2022.

The expansion underscores Meta's broader ambition to scale its compute capacity dramatically. The company operates more than 30 self-built data center campuses globally and is targeting tens of gigawatts of compute within the decade. It is also a major leaser of third-party data center and cloud capacity, giving it flexibility to supplement its owned infrastructure as demand for AI and cloud services accelerates.

The continued investment in Utah reflects the strategic importance of the region as a data center hub, benefiting from relatively low energy costs, available land, and a favorable business climate. For the data center industry, Meta's expansion signals that hyperscale demand remains robust despite broader economic uncertainty, and that liquid cooling is becoming a standard design element for new large-scale facilities.
