Maincubes completes first module of 16MW FRA03 data center in Frankfurt

German data center operator Maincubes has reached a significant construction milestone at its FRA03 facility in Frankfurt, completing the first module of the 16MW hyperscale and high-performance computing (HPC) site. The announcement, made via social media this week, marks a key step in the company's broader expansion strategy across Germany's largest data center market.

The FRA03 facility, located in Schwalbach am Taunus in the state of Hesse, will deliver 16MW of critical IT capacity across 7,680 square meters (82,665 square feet) of whitespace, spread over three floors and six dedicated IT rooms. The site is designed to be fully powered by renewable energy and incorporates waste heat recovery systems, aligning with the growing emphasis on sustainability in European data center operations. The property was previously owned by Samsung, adding a notable redevelopment angle to the project.

Plans for FRA03 were first unveiled in January 2022, with construction getting underway in the fourth quarter of 2024. The structural topping-out ceremony was completed in June 2025, and the recent completion of the first module signals that the facility is progressing steadily toward operational readiness. The site is purpose-built for hyperscale and HPC workloads, a segment that continues to see robust demand as AI and advanced computing applications drive infrastructure requirements across Europe.

Maincubes is not slowing down in Frankfurt. The company confirmed it is advancing plans for a fourth site, FRA04, which is slated to offer 40MW of capacity, and a fifth campus, FRA05, with a planned 75MW. Together, the three Frankfurt projects represent a substantial pipeline aimed at serving large-scale cloud providers and high-performance computing users. Beyond Frankfurt, Maincubes operates facilities in Berlin and Amsterdam, and has another hyperscale and HPC site under construction in Berlin targeting between 144MW and 186MW of capacity.

The completion of FRA03's first module underscores the broader momentum in Germany's data center market, where demand for scalable, energy-efficient infrastructure continues to outpace supply in key urban hubs. With renewable energy integration and waste heat reuse becoming standard expectations from both regulators and customers, Maincubes' approach reflects the industry's shift toward more sustainable and technically advanced facilities. As the company pushes forward with FRA04 and FRA05, its ability to deliver on time will be closely watched by hyperscale tenants and regional competitors alike.

Founded in 2012, Maincubes is majority-owned by investment group DTCP, which has supported the company's expansion across multiple European markets. The FRA03 project, once fully operational, will add meaningful capacity to Frankfurt's tightly contested data center landscape.
