Japan’s Largest Data Center to Break Ground in Kagoshima This Year

A major new data center project, billed as the largest in Japan, is set to begin construction in Kagoshima Prefecture later this year. The facility will be developed by a Japanese entity established in January by China Development Capital and other partners, marking a significant cross-border investment in Japan’s digital infrastructure.

The data center will be located within the “Circular Park Kyushu,” a decarbonization hub built on the former site of a thermal power plant operated by Kyushu Electric Power Company. This location is strategically chosen to leverage existing energy infrastructure while aligning with Japan’s broader push toward carbon neutrality. The project is expected to commence small-scale operations as early as the next fiscal year, even as main construction continues.

Once fully operational, the facility is anticipated to become the largest data center in Japan by scale, catering to growing demand from cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and enterprise digitalization. The integration of a former fossil fuel power plant site into a green energy park underscores a broader industry trend of repurposing industrial assets for sustainable, high-tech use. This development could set a precedent for future data center projects in the region, particularly those seeking to balance massive power consumption with environmental commitments.
