Quantum computing firm Infleqtion has supplied a Japanese research team with a quantum processing unit (QPU), marking a key step in the launch of Japan's first operational neutral-atom full-stack quantum system. The machine, named Shunkai, is expected to begin operations with approximately 50 qubits and is designed to scale to 500 qubits as development progresses.
The delivery supports the Ohmori Moonshot project, led by Professor Kenji Ohmori at the Institute for Molecular Science (IMS), part of Japan's National Institutes of Natural Sciences. Infleqtion was the only foreign quantum partner selected by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) for its Quantum Moonshot program, which under Moonshot Goal 6 aims to build a fault-tolerant universal quantum computer and quantum Internet by 2050.
In its next phase, the research team will focus on improving system integration, stability, and scalability. The Shunkai quantum computer will be made available to external users across academia and industry, supporting application development and advancing quantum error correction research.

Our quantum processing unit delivers the programmability, scalability, and fidelity control that next-generation systems demand.”
Founded as ColdQuanta and spun out from the University of Colorado in 2007, Infleqtion designs and develops instruments and systems for quantum technology applications. In September 2025, the company announced plans to go public via a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) merger with Churchill Capital Corp X. Following the completion of the deal, the company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in February 2026.
The deployment in Japan highlights the growing international push toward neutral-atom quantum architectures, which are gaining traction for their programmability and scalability. The project also underscores the strategic importance of cross-border collaboration in quantum research, particularly as nations race to achieve practical quantum advantage in the coming decades.
