Google signs 155MW solar PPA with RWE in Oklahoma to power growing infrastructure footprint

Google has signed a 155MW solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with German energy firm RWE in McCurtain County, Oklahoma, marking the company's second renewable energy deal in the Sooner State this year as it accelerates efforts to match its growing electricity consumption with clean power.

The 15-year agreement is tied to RWE's Crooked Creek Solar project, which is slated to begin construction later this year and is expected to become operational in 2028. Once online, the project will deliver power into the Southwest Power Pool grid, helping Google cover electricity usage from its expanding operations in Oklahoma. The deal underscores how hyperscale cloud providers are increasingly turning to long-term PPAs to secure reliable, affordable energy for their data center footprints.

"Supporting a strong, stable, affordable grid is a top priority as we expand our infrastructure. Our agreement with RWE adds critical new generation to the local system, boosting the amount of affordable and reliable power supply for Oklahoma and the region," said Will Conkling, director of energy and power at Google.

Google has deepened its presence in Oklahoma over the past decade and a half. The company operates a campus in Pryor, first announced in 2007 and launched in 2011, which has been expanded at regular intervals since. In August of last year, Google announced plans to invest $9 billion to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure in the state, and earlier this year a proposed data center development in Tulsa received approval from the local council.

This latest PPA follows a 15-year, 200MW solar agreement Google signed with Enlight in May, reflecting a broader trend among hyperscale operators to lock in multiple renewable contracts within a single market as they scale up compute capacity. For RWE, the deal adds to a substantial Oklahoma portfolio that includes the 148MW Boiling Springs wind project in Woodward County, along with six other power projects totaling 1.6GW in capacity currently in development across the state.

The agreement also highlights the growing importance of the Southwest Power Pool as a regional market for renewable energy procurement, as data center developers and operators seek to align new capacity with sustainability targets while ensuring grid reliability in an era of surging electricity demand.
