The Echo subsea cable, a joint venture between Meta and Google, officially landed in Singapore on Friday, July 31, marking a significant milestone for trans-Pacific connectivity. The cable system is designed to link Singapore and Jakarta to Eureka, California, via a cable landing station in Guam, and will span more than 17,000 kilometers (10,563 miles) once fully completed. Currently, the segment between California and Guam is already partially operational, providing early capacity for users on both sides of the Pacific.
Announced in 2021, Echo was conceived as a sister project to the Bifrost cable, which also connects Singapore to the United States with branching lines in Guam, Mexico, and the Philippines. Bifrost became ready for service in October 2025, and Echo is now following a similar trajectory with its landing in Singapore. The completion of the full Echo route is expected to significantly enhance data transfer capacity between Southeast Asia and North America, a corridor that has seen surging demand from cloud services, AI workloads, and digital economy growth.
The project has attracted substantial industry participation beyond its original backers. Australian telecommunications provider Telstra and Trans Pacific Network purchased fiber pairs on the cable in 2024, while subsea cable firm FLAG acquired additional capacity in December 2025. These investments underscore the strategic importance of the route, with multiple carriers positioning themselves to serve the growing bandwidth needs of enterprises and hyperscale cloud operators in the region.
The landing in Singapore is particularly notable given the city-state’s role as a major data center hub in Asia Pacific. With increasing regulatory scrutiny on data residency and a push for more resilient digital infrastructure, the arrival of Echo provides local operators and international enterprises with more diverse routing options. Industry observers note that such cable systems are critical to supporting the expansion of high-performance computing facilities and cloud regions across Southeast Asia, where latency and reliability are paramount.
As the cable moves toward full operational status, the collaboration between Google, Meta, and other partners signals a broader trend of hyperscalers investing directly in subsea infrastructure to secure capacity for their global networks.
