Google Explores First Self-Built Data Center in New Mexico's Lea County

Google is evaluating a new data center development in Lea County, New Mexico, a move that would mark the search giant's first self-built facility in the state and extend its infrastructure footprint deeper into the southwestern United States.

The company announced this week that it is "exploring a new data center project" in Lea County, though it did not disclose the proposed location, facility specifications, or anticipated capacity. "Though many details remain outstanding, we're excited about the possibilities that exist in Lea County, and look forward to sharing more as the project progresses," Google said in a statement.

Lea County sits in the southeast corner of New Mexico along the Texas border, with Lovington serving as its county seat. The region's proximity to Google's existing operations in neighboring Arizona and Texas makes it a logical candidate for expansion, though New Mexico's data center market remains relatively small compared to those states, with activity largely concentrated around Albuquerque. Existing operators in the state include Stack, Meta, Csquare, and H5.

The potential project underscores the continued geographic diversification of hyperscale data center development across the United States, as major cloud providers seek new sites to support growing demand for compute capacity. Should Google proceed, the Lea County facility would represent a significant addition to New Mexico's emerging digital infrastructure landscape and could spur further investment in the region.
