Google Emerges as Potential Customer for MidAmerican's Proposed Iowa Data Center Campus

Google is potentially set to be the customer of an upcoming data center campus in Salix County, Iowa, according to local press reports. The cloud and search giant has expressed interest in a 900-acre site in the county, which energy company MidAmerican proposed for data center development in June 2026. The project, bounded by Old Highway 75, 260th Street, and Charles Avenue, was initially announced without a confirmed end user, but the disclosure of Google's interest marks a significant step forward for the development.

The land in question was previously part of Woodbury County but was annexed by the Salix City Council in April. This annexation is notable because Woodbury County passed a moratorium on data centers on June 23, effectively halting new developments in the county. The move to Salix allows the project to proceed outside that restriction, highlighting the strategic importance of the site's location in western Iowa, close to the Nebraska border.

MidAmerican Energy has been careful to frame the announcement as an early transparency effort rather than a formal commitment. In a statement, the company said: "This is not a project announcement, development agreement or request for approval. MidAmerican is sharing this information now so local leaders and residents have an early, transparent opportunity to learn more before any formal plans are submitted." The company also shared a letter with the Salix City Council explaining that introducing Google now is intended to give residents and local leaders an early opportunity to ask questions, share priorities and concerns with Google, and consider the potential opportunity with more complete information before any development plans are presented.

The potential project carries substantial economic implications for the region. MidAmerican noted that the development would bring an increased tax base, construction activity, and long-term economic opportunity to Salix. However, no rezoning request or development application has been filed yet, indicating that the project remains in its early stages. The company emphasized that introducing Google now allows residents and local leaders to evaluate the opportunity based on facts rather than speculation, while giving Google the chance to listen, answer questions, and understand Salix's priorities before any formal plans are submitted.

Google already has a significant presence in Iowa. In June 2025, the company pledged to invest $7 billion in expanding its data center footprint in the state, including the development of a new campus in Cedar Rapids and the expansion of its existing campus in Council Bluffs. The company also has data centers in development in Linn County. This latest potential project in Salix would further cement Iowa's role as a key hub for Google's cloud infrastructure in the Midwest.
