Global Switch, the London-headquartered data center operator, has revealed plans to enter the Thai market with a new presence in Bangkok. The announcement was made via a LinkedIn post on Thursday, August 6, marking the company's first confirmed move into Southeast Asia's emerging digital infrastructure hub beyond its existing footprint in Singapore.
The company cited growing demand for data center capacity in the region, Bangkok's strategic access to subsea cable systems, and strong connectivity with other Asian markets as key factors driving the expansion. However, no specific details regarding project timelines, investment size, or facility locations were disclosed at this stage.
Global Switch operates a portfolio of data centers primarily across Europe, alongside two facilities in Singapore and one in Hong Kong. Founded in 1998 and headquartered in London, the company was acquired by Chinese steel conglomerate Jiangsu Shagang Group in 2016. It has been seeking a buyer since early 2021, and previously divested its Australian operations to HMC Capital, signaling a strategic repositioning of its global assets.
Thailand's data center market is heavily concentrated in and around Bangkok, the capital city. According to Data Center Map, the country hosts approximately 65 facilities, nearly all of which are located in the greater Bangkok area. Active operators in the market include NTT, TrueIDC, Empyrion, DigitalEdge, Bridge DC, SuperNAP Thailand, DayOne, and Etix, among others.
The move into Thailand reflects a broader trend of international operators expanding into Southeast Asia, where digital economy growth and cloud adoption are driving sustained demand for reliable, low-latency infrastructure. For Global Switch, entering Bangkok could provide a strategic foothold in a rapidly maturing market, though the lack of concrete project details leaves questions about scale and timing unanswered. Industry observers will be watching closely for further announcements that clarify the company's ambitions in the region.
