GE Vernova has introduced a new medium-voltage Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system designed specifically for the data center market, aiming to address the growing demand for reliable, high-capacity power protection in an era of AI-driven expansion. The company said it expects to begin shipping the units by mid-2027, with the first project slated for energization in late 2027.
The newly announced system, branded MV-UPS, operates at medium voltage, a departure from traditional UPS configurations that are typically deployed at low voltage after electricity has been stepped down. According to GE Vernova, this approach creates a stability block between the facility and its power source, enabling protection across a significantly larger portion of the data center while preventing sudden fluctuations in electricity demand from being transmitted directly back to the grid or generation assets.
The system is engineered to sit on a facility's medium-voltage network, positioned between the power supply and critical loads. It integrates power-conversion technology, advanced controls, and embedded energy storage to maintain steady voltage and frequency for mission-critical operations. At the same time, it buffers abrupt swings in facility demand before they reach the grid or on-site generation, a feature that becomes increasingly important as AI workloads introduce highly variable power consumption patterns.
GE Vernova said the MV-UPS is particularly well suited for AI data center applications, as it smooths out the power demand volatility synonymous with AI computing while also simplifying downstream electrical infrastructure. This capability is expected to help operators reduce complexity and improve overall system efficiency in facilities that house power-hungry accelerators and high-density racks.
"Reliable, uninterrupted power is foundational to every energy-intensive industry, and AI data centers are raising that requirement to a new level of scale and complexity," said Philippe Piron, CEO of GE Vernova's Electrification segment. He noted that the product applies the company's existing power-conversion and energy-storage technology "in a new innovative way," aiming to deliver reliability alongside cost and footprint efficiency.
The launch extends GE Vernova's broader data center portfolio, which already includes gas turbines, substations, transformers, switchgear, and energy management systems. The company has been actively securing supply agreements with major cloud and data center operators. In March of this year, for instance, GE Vernova signed a deal with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide power equipment for four of its data center facilities.
Industry analysts view the move as a response to the intensifying pressure on data center operators to secure robust power infrastructure that can keep pace with AI-driven growth. As workloads become more dynamic and facilities scale to megawatt-level capacities, medium-voltage UPS systems are emerging as a critical component in ensuring uptime and grid stability. The MV-UPS is poised to offer a compelling option for operators seeking to balance resilience, cost, and physical footprint in their power architecture.
