GCM expands high-performance graphite heat sink lineup for liquid-cooled data centers

Australian thermal management specialist GCM Corporation is broadening its portfolio of high-performance heat sinks, responding to rising demand from liquid-cooled data center operators grappling with escalating chip power densities. The Western Australia-based company said it has expanded its commercialization strategy to include direct engagement with liquid cooling OEMs serving the AI server and hyperscale data center market.

The company's VHD range of heat sinks is built around a novel graphite-based material, which GCM claims delivers superior thermal conductivity compared with traditional copper or aluminum alternatives. As part of the expansion, GCM has increased its VHD heat sink lineup from 21 to 44 products, nearly doubling the options available to cooling system integrators and OEM partners.

Clinton Booth, CEO and managing director of GCM, said the company is continuing to advance engagement with liquid cooling OEMs that serve the data center market. "As AI drives chip power densities higher, thermal management has become a critical design consideration, with hyperscale operators increasingly relying on proven, specialist OEM providers," Booth said. He noted that by engaging directly with these OEMs, GCM is positioning its VHD products within cooling platforms for evaluation, and that design and manufacturing activities have already commenced with an established global liquid cooling OEM that has delivered solutions to hyperscale operators.

The move reflects a broader industry shift toward liquid cooling as a mainstream thermal management approach, particularly in AI-dense facilities where air cooling is no longer sufficient. GCM's graphite-based heat sinks are still at an early stage of commercialization, and according to a report in The Australian, the company has supplied samples to unnamed customers in China, Europe, Korea and the US for testing and prototype development. GCM also produces smaller heat sinks for gaming PCs, though the data center-focused VHD range is now central to its growth strategy.

Industry observers see GCM's push into liquid cooling OEM channels as a strategic attempt to secure a foothold in a rapidly consolidating supply chain, where thermal performance is becoming a key differentiator for hyperscale operators. If the graphite-based technology proves reliable in large-scale deployments, it could challenge incumbent copper and aluminum solutions across a range of high-performance computing environments.
