Equinix Signs Singapore Solar Deal, Boosts Renewable Portfolio to 215 MWp

By: IDCNOVARegion: Southeast Asia
US-based data center operator Equinix has signed its fourth renewable energy power purchase agreement in Singapore since 2024, securing at least 11.5 MWp of solar power from Flo Energy Singapore. The agreement includes an option to expand capacity to 50 MWp over time, marking a significant step in the company's sustainability strategy for the region.

The deal positions Equinix as the first customer under Flo's newly launched Data Centre Solutions offering, a program Flo also provides to data center operators in Australia. The solar power will be sourced from rooftop installations on industrial and commercial buildings across Singapore, helping to address the city-state's land constraints while expanding renewable energy access for businesses.

Equinix said the agreement supports Singapore's Green Plan 2030, the government's national sustainability strategy. With this latest signing, the company's cumulative renewable energy portfolio in Singapore is expected to reach 215 MWp by 2028. All of its agreements combined can generate approximately 250,000 MWh of electricity annually.

The deal broadens Equinix's renewable sourcing in Singapore to include private-sector providers, complementing earlier agreements with Sembcorp, an ESR-TEPCO venture, and national programs such as SolarNova 7 and a JTC project on Jurong Island. This diversification of supply sources reflects the company's efforts to secure reliable clean energy in a market with limited land availability.

Beyond solar procurement, Equinix is separately funding research into alternative clean-energy sources. The company has committed more than S$9 million ($7 million) to a multi-year program covering geothermal energy and small modular reactors, contributed S$450,000 to a Singapore Management University program, and is planning a co-innovation facility with the National University of Singapore. The facility, to be located at Equinix's upcoming SG6 data center, will focus on technologies including fuel cells, battery storage, and liquid cooling.

Yee May Leong, Equinix's managing director for Singapore, said the agreement reflected collaboration between the public and private sectors and would help meet rising demand for digital infrastructure while advancing the country's sustainability goals. Matthijs Guichelaar, chief executive of Flo, noted that the deal pools solar generation from commercial and industrial rooftops to make renewable energy more accessible to businesses in a land-constrained market.

The announcement comes as Equinix continues to expand its global renewable energy footprint. The company now has more than 1,490 MW of wind and solar power purchase agreements under contract across 11 countries, including Australia, India, Japan, and Singapore. For the second quarter of 2026, Equinix reported revenue of $2.625 billion, up 16 percent from a year earlier, with operating income of $665 million, up 35 percent, and net income attributable to common stockholders of $479 million.

The agreement underscores the growing importance of renewable energy procurement for data center operators in Asia, where sustainability requirements and energy costs are increasingly shaping infrastructure investment decisions.
