Equinix Achieves Topping-Out Milestone for MU4.3 Data Center in Munich, Germany

Equinix has reached a significant construction milestone at its MU4 data center campus in Munich, Germany, marking the topping-out of the latest expansion phase, known as MU4.3. The event, celebrated by executives from Equinix and Mercury Engineering, signals a key step forward in expanding digital infrastructure in one of Europe’s key data hub cities.

Mercury Engineering announced the topping-out milestone this week, noting that the completion of the structural framework paves the way for the internal fit-out of the facility. “This significant milestone paves the way for the internal fit-out to be completed,” Mercury said in a statement. “With a phased fit-out strategy, MU4.3 expands an operational facility and reinforces Munich’s role within Europe’s data landscape.” The ceremony included the traditional placement of a wreath atop the building, a custom observed in German construction to mark the structural completion.

The MU4 data center, located at Dywidagstrasse 10 in the Aschheim district of Munich, first opened in 2022. The initial phase delivered 2,250 square meters (24,200 square feet) of colocation space, equivalent to approximately 950 racks of capacity. A second phase, which launched around the second quarter of 2024, added another 750 racks. Once fully built out across four stories, the entire MU4 site will offer a total of 13,608 square meters (146,475 square feet) of space, with capacity for up to 2,950 additional racks.

Equinix currently operates two other data centers in the Munich area—MU1 and MU3—both of which are leased facilities. In contrast, the MU4 campus is owned outright by Equinix, underscoring the company’s long-term commitment to the Bavarian capital as a strategic market. The continued expansion of MU4 reflects growing demand for colocation and interconnection services driven by cloud adoption, AI workloads, and digital transformation across Europe.

Eoghan Cremin, operations director at Mercury Engineering, highlighted the company’s enduring presence in Germany. “Germany has been a consistent market for Mercury for almost two decades. We are proud to be delivering another data center build for a longstanding client in Germany and committed to outcomes that match that responsibility,” he said. The collaboration between Equinix and Mercury underscores the importance of reliable construction partners in scaling critical digital infrastructure amid supply chain and labor constraints.

The topping-out of MU4.3 not only strengthens Equinix’s footprint in Munich but also reinforces the city’s position as a key node in Europe’s data center landscape. As enterprises and hyperscalers continue to demand low-latency connectivity and sustainable colocation options, Equinix’s owned campus in Aschheim is poised to serve as a critical hub for regional and international data traffic.
