Envision commissions 2GW renewable-powered data center campus in Inner Mongolia

Chinese green technology company Envision has announced the commissioning of a 2GW data center campus in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia, marking its entry into the large-scale data center arena alongside notable domestic players such as DeepSeek and RedNote.

The company, known primarily for its wind turbines, energy storage systems, and green hydrogen solutions, revealed last week that the campus includes a 120,000 square meter (approximately 1.29 million square feet) data center facility that will be powered directly by renewable energy. Envision did not disclose details regarding the construction timeline, potential end-users, or the contractors involved in building the facility.

Ulanqab has emerged as a strategic hub for data center development in China, with Envision joining a wave of recent announcements. In early August, reports indicated that Chinese artificial intelligence champion DeepSeek plans to build a 1GW campus in the city, while social media platform RedNote is set to develop a 600MW facility there as well. The concentration of large-scale projects underscores the region's growing importance as a destination for compute-intensive workloads, driven by its access to renewable resources and favorable geographic conditions.

Envision's move into data centers aligns with its broader ambition to expand beyond clean energy hardware. In June, the company stated it was planning to develop 5GW of green AI computing capacity in desert and arid regions globally by 2030. However, it remains unclear whether Envision has prior experience in building or operating data center facilities, which could pose execution challenges as it navigates a new sector.

Founded in 2007 as a wind turbine manufacturer, Envision says it has installed 100GW of wind turbines worldwide, including 20GW in 2025 alone. The company is currently developing "net-zero industrial parks" in Ordos and Chifeng, both in Inner Mongolia, as well as in Cangzhou, Hebei, reflecting its strategy of integrating renewable energy generation with industrial infrastructure.

Industry observers note that Envision's entry into data center development signals a broader trend of clean energy companies leveraging their renewable assets to capture value from the surging demand for AI and cloud computing infrastructure. By pairing large-scale data centers with direct renewable power supply, such projects could help address the energy intensity of modern computing while supporting China's carbon neutrality goals. The success of Envision's Ulanqab campus may set a precedent for how energy-focused firms can participate in the digital infrastructure boom.
