Diraq and Equinix have announced plans to install the world’s first silicon spin quantum computer in a shared commercial data center, marking a significant step toward mainstream adoption of quantum computing. The deployment, scheduled for completion in October 2026 at an Equinix facility in Sydney, Australia, will place an eight-qubit quantum system alongside conventional servers within an operational data center environment.
The compact system, which consumes less than 20 kilowatts of power, integrates cryogenic cooling and control electronics into a self-contained unit that fits within standard server racks. Diraq says scaling to higher qubit counts requires only a chip replacement, with no modifications to the surrounding infrastructure, making the system highly upgradable and easy to deploy across existing data center footprints.

The collaboration will test real-world performance of the quantum system in a live commercial data center with open network connectivity, including remote monitoring and secure integration with classical CPUs and GPUs. By operating alongside cloud and AI infrastructure already hosted at Equinix, Diraq aims to explore how quantum and AI can work together as both technologies scale, laying the groundwork for practical hybrid quantum-classical computing. Once testing is complete, Diraq will offer industry partners and customers the opportunity to observe the quantum system in action and explore potential applications within an Equinix facility that meets enterprise data sovereignty, security, and compliance requirements.

Diraq’s qubits are manufactured using the same semiconductor processes found in today’s phones and laptops, leveraging existing foundries to clear a path toward millions of qubits on a single chip. Because the qubits are extremely small, Diraq can pack far more into less space than other quantum technologies, resulting in systems compact enough for multiple units to operate within a standard data center alongside classical compute infrastructure. The company envisions data centers hosting not just one quantum computer, but entire fleets of them.
At utility scale, where a quantum computer delivers more value than it costs to run, these systems are expected to solve problems beyond the reach of today’s most powerful machines, such as modeling molecules and chemical reactions to accelerate drug discovery, materials design, and energy solutions. Rather than replacing existing systems, quantum computers will work alongside AI and classical infrastructure in a hybrid future where each technology tackles what it does best.
