Australian quantum computing startup Diraq has partnered with digital infrastructure provider Equinix to install a quantum computer at a Sydney data center, marking what the companies describe as a global first for silicon spin quantum technology in a shared commercial facility. The system is expected to be fully operational by October 2026.
The deployment is significant for both the quantum computing and data center industries. Until now, most quantum systems have been confined to laboratories, enterprise sites, or facilities owned by quantum companies themselves. Placing a quantum computer inside a commercial colocation facility signals a shift toward integrating these advanced systems into the everyday digital infrastructure that enterprises already rely on, potentially accelerating mainstream adoption.
The quantum computer will feature a silicon chip with eight qubits, housed alongside self-contained cryogenic cooling and control electronics. According to the companies, scaling the system to higher qubit counts requires replacing only the chip itself, not the surrounding infrastructure, a design Equinix described as "easily upgradable." The system is also designed to fit within existing data center layouts, requiring minimal integration and drawing less than 20kW of power.
Andrew Dzurak, founder and CEO of Diraq, emphasized the broader implications of the milestone. "Quantum computers are about to become as essential to data centers and computing infrastructure as data servers, CPUs and GPUs," he said. "The data center is where quantum computing goes mainstream, and that shift starts now. It's a first, and the milestone is in the simplicity itself. Diraq's quantum computers integrate into operational data centers like any other rack. That's the advantage of Diraq's silicon spin qubits: as we scale to millions of qubits, our system is deployable anywhere in the world, right next to the AI systems that are reshaping the global economy."
Jarrod Nink, managing director for Australia at Equinix, added: "Quantum computing's future depends not only on breakthroughs in hardware, but on proving how these systems can operate within the digital infrastructure enterprises rely on every day. Our collaboration with Diraq will demonstrate how quantum computing can be securely deployed alongside AI, cloud and high-performance computing environments."
Founded in 2022 and headquartered in Sydney, Diraq builds quantum processors using silicon quantum dot technology. The company aims to develop a full-stack quantum computer that moves the industry away from what it calls "large, error-ridden systems" toward fault-tolerant computing. The Sydney deployment follows a broader trend of quantum hardware entering colocation spaces, with UK-based Oxford Quantum Circuits having previously installed a system at an Equinix facility in Tokyo, and fellow UK firm Orca deploying hardware in Digital Realty's liquid cooling lab in London.
