Digital Realty to Develop Cable Landing Station at Los Angeles LAX12 Data Center

By: IDCNOVARegion: North America
Digital Realty has announced plans to construct a new cable landing station (CLS) at its LAX12 data center in Los Angeles, California, marking a significant expansion of the company's role in global subsea connectivity infrastructure. The move comes as demand for intercontinental bandwidth continues to surge, driven by cloud computing, AI workloads, and the growing need for resilient cross-border digital infrastructure.

The project is expected to begin supporting subsea cables in 2028, though the company has not disclosed how many cables the facility will be able to host. The CLS will be developed in partnership with Assured Communications, a specialist in subsea infrastructure design and delivery, which will support the design, engineering, and construction of the project.

The LAX12 facility, located at 2260 East El Segundo Boulevard in El Segundo, is a two-story data center totaling 129,000 square feet (approximately 12,000 square meters) with around 7MW of capacity. The site was originally developed by 365 Main in 2005 and acquired by Digital Realty in 2010. Digital Realty's LAX11 facility is situated nearby, forming part of the company's broader Los Angeles campus.

"This development reflects our continued focus on expanding Digital Realty's role in supporting global connectivity," said Andy Power, president and CEO of Digital Realty. "By bringing together subsea landing infrastructure with our existing interconnection and data center platform, we are strengthening the intercontinental connectivity available across our Los Angeles campus and providing our customers with a more seamless and scalable environment for connecting across regions."

Joel Ogren, founder and CEO of Assured Communications, emphasized the broader significance of the undertaking: "Assured Communications is supporting the design, engineering and construction of the project, drawing on its experience in subsea cable systems and landing infrastructure development. Projects like this are reshaping how global infrastructure is deployed and connected. We're excited to help bring a new subsea cable landing station to Los Angeles to further strengthen connectivity between Asia Pacific and North America."

Los Angeles has long served as a critical landing point for multiple current and planned subsea cables connecting the United States to Asia, Australia, and South America. Digital Realty operates four facilities across the Los Angeles metropolitan area and last year acquired a 5.4-acre site at 4400 Pacific Blvd in Vernon for future development, signaling the company's sustained commitment to expanding its presence in one of North America's most strategically important connectivity hubs.

The addition of a cable landing station at LAX12 underscores a growing industry trend in which data center operators are vertically integrating subsea connectivity into their campus ecosystems. By co-locating landing infrastructure with interconnection and colocation services, operators can reduce latency, streamline network architecture, and offer customers more direct access to international bandwidth. For Digital Realty, the project represents a strategic move to capture growing demand from hyperscalers, content providers, and enterprises seeking robust transpacific connectivity solutions.
