Trentar Private, the technology and infrastructure arm of Indian specialty chemicals company Dorf Ketal Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Maharashtra to develop a 500MW hyperscale data center campus in the western Indian state, with a proposed investment of 30,000 crore rupees ($3.3 billion). The move marks a significant diversification for a company whose core business has been specialty chemicals for industrial applications since its founding in 1992, and underscores the accelerating appetite for large-scale digital infrastructure across India as demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence workloads and sovereign data hosting continues to surge.
Under the terms of the MoU, the Maharashtra state government will facilitate coordination on applicable permissions, registrations, approvals, clearances and incentives in accordance with prevailing policies and regulations. Trentar said the project has also received the state's letter of intent outlining the applicable support and incentives. The precise location of the data center and timelines for construction have not been disclosed.
Subodh Menon, group founder and vice chairman of Trentar Private, said the company would leverage modular construction techniques to bring the facility online rapidly. "Maharashtra has laid a strong foundation for India's digital economy, and we are proud to contribute to the State's next phase of growth," Menon said. "For more than three decades, our group has delivered complex, mission-critical infrastructure through engineering excellence and operational discipline. We will bring that experience to a modular data center campus built for rapid deployment and scalable growth, with sustainability, advanced technology and cost efficiency at its core."
Trentar said it hopes to power the data center with at least 51 percent renewable energy and is investigating the use of recycled water and efficient cooling systems. The company said the facility "will contribute to a more secure, resilient and sovereign digital infrastructure for the country." While Dorf Ketal's Trentar division is investing across multiple technology areas, it does not appear to have prior experience developing data centers, making the project a notable entry by a non-traditional player into India's fast-growing data center market.
Most of Maharashtra's existing data centers are concentrated in Mumbai, the state's largest city and home to one of India's largest data center clusters. Other major projects in development in the state include a $21 billion initiative from AirTrunk that could eventually deliver 3GW of capacity. The entry of a chemicals conglomerate into hyperscale data center development reflects the broader trend of industrial groups seeking to capitalize on India's digital infrastructure boom, driven by rising cloud adoption, data localization requirements and government-backed incentive programs. If realized, the Trentar project would add substantial capacity to a market that is rapidly becoming one of Asia's most competitive data center destinations.
