Bosch-Backed Alliance to Deploy Over 300 MW of Hydrogen Fuel Cells for AI Data Centers

The surging computational demands of artificial intelligence are placing unprecedented strain on conventional power grids, driving data center operators to seek alternative energy sources that can provide continuous, low-emission power. In response to this challenge, ECL and PowerCell, with strategic backing from Bosch, have announced a major initiative to deploy over 300 megawatts of hydrogen fuel cell systems for next-generation data center infrastructure. The agreement combines a firm order for PowerCell’s PS190 equipment with a memorandum of understanding outlining the progressive expansion of capacity as ECL advances its FlexGrid platform.

By integrating hydrogen-based generation directly into data center campuses, the partnership aims to offer a viable alternative for projects that require high energy availability without relying exclusively on the electrical grid. A key pillar of the deal is Bosch’s role as an industrial partner and manufacturer of the systems developed by PowerCell. Bosch’s experience in large-scale production will be critical to supporting the anticipated surge in demand as ECL expands its infrastructure for AI-specialized data centers. The collaboration is designed to accelerate the commercial deployment of fuel cell technology, which is gaining prominence in applications where operational continuity is essential.

The alliance builds on already validated operational experience. PowerCell systems have been running for over two years at ECL’s MV-1 data center in Mountain View, California. The next deployment is planned for the CSC-1 campus in Santa Clara, where ECL is continuing to develop its FlexGrid platform to support new AI workloads. The use of hydrogen as a primary generation source reduces dependence on fossil fuels and offers greater flexibility in regions where access to new electrical capacity is a bottleneck for data center expansion. The adoption of fuel cells in digital infrastructure reflects a growing industry trend, as technologies like hydrogen begin to consolidate as a complementary option to the electrical grid, improving operational resilience at a time when AI applications are driving one of the largest increases in electricity consumption in recent years.
