US renewables developer Arevon Energy announced on Wednesday that its 300-MW Nighthawk battery energy storage system (BESS) in Poway, California, has commenced commercial operations, adding 1,200 MWh of storage capacity to the San Diego region's electricity grid. The milestone marks a significant step in bolstering grid reliability in a region that has faced growing demand and periodic supply constraints during peak periods.
The Nighthawk project, one of the largest standalone storage facilities in the area, is designed to absorb surplus solar generation during midday hours and discharge power during evening peaks, when demand typically surges. By shifting renewable energy across time periods, the facility helps reduce reliance on natural gas peaker plants and supports California's aggressive decarbonization targets, which call for a fully carbon-free grid by 2045.
Arevon, which develops, owns, and operates utility-scale renewable and storage assets across the US, said the system completed testing and interconnection ahead of schedule. The company did not disclose the total project cost, but industry analysts note that a project of this scale typically represents a capital investment in the range of several hundred million dollars, reflecting the accelerating pace of storage deployment nationwide.
Battery storage has become a critical component of grid planning in California, where solar penetration has outpaced the ability of traditional infrastructure to manage evening ramps. The Nighthawk facility is expected to provide enough electricity to power tens of thousands of homes for several hours, offering a buffer against grid emergencies and reducing the frequency of flex alerts issued by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) during extreme heat events.
Industry observers view the project as part of a broader wave of storage capacity coming online across the US Southwest, driven by falling battery costs, federal tax incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act, and state-level procurement mandates. As more intermittent renewables connect to the grid, large-scale batteries like Nighthawk are increasingly viewed as essential infrastructure for maintaining reliability without sacrificing clean energy goals.
Arevon said the Nighthawk BESS will be operated remotely through its control center, with round-the-clock monitoring and dispatch capability aligned with CAISO market signals. The company also highlighted that the project was developed with attention to local community engagement, including noise mitigation measures and safety protocols consistent with industry best practices.
