Anthropic to Invest in Australia's A$31.9B Western Downs Data Center Project

Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI model, has signed an agreement to invest in Western Downs Digital Park, a data center project in Australia valued at A$31.9 billion ($22.2 billion), marking the company's first major infrastructure commitment in the country. The deal positions the U.S. AI company at the center of a rapidly expanding digital infrastructure corridor in Queensland at a time when global demand for AI computing capacity is surging across the Asia-Pacific region.

David Crisafulli, premier of Queensland, announced the agreement during a Wednesday session of the Queensland parliament focused on energy development. He described the project as a long-term commitment to the state, with the site plan scheduled to come online in 2027. "Earlier today Anthropic signed an historic agreement for their first Australian data center. Queensland will be home to the Western Downs Digital Park, a long-term commitment to our state with the site plan to come online in 2027," Crisafulli said. He added that the project will deliver more jobs and put more energy into Queensland's grid, noting that he had met with Anthropic during a recent trade mission to outline the state's advantages, including energy security and a streamlined approval process. "To have secured Anthropic's first major investment in Australia is a massive show of confidence in Queensland," he said.

The Western Downs Digital Park is located approximately 250 kilometers from Brisbane and spans 725.5 hectares, with a designated peak capacity of 2.16 GW. The project is being developed by Singapore-based Zerra DC. The scale of the facility underscores the growing energy and land requirements associated with AI workloads, which demand significantly more power and cooling infrastructure than traditional data center operations.

Anthropic's entry into the Australian market reflects a broader trend of AI companies seeking to secure dedicated computing capacity in regions with abundant energy resources and supportive regulatory environments. The Asia-Pacific region is projected to see its data center capacity grow from 32 GW to 57 GW by 2030, driven largely by AI adoption, according to research from JLL. Queensland's commitment to energy security and expedited approvals has positioned it as an increasingly attractive destination for hyperscale and AI-focused infrastructure investment. The Western Downs project is expected to contribute to local employment and grid development while reinforcing Australia's role in the global AI infrastructure landscape.
