Amazon has announced plans to invest €16 billion ($17.98 billion) in infrastructure buildouts across Germany in 2027, a commitment that underscores the country's growing role as a strategic technology hub in Europe. The investment will span data centers and AI infrastructure, high-speed satellite internet through Amazon Leo, logistics expansion, and a new production slate by Prime Video. Since 2010, Amazon has already spent approximately €100 billion in Germany, making the latest pledge one of its most significant single-year commitments in the country.
Of the total €16 billion, €4.8 billion ($5.39 billion) will be directed toward data centers and AI to expand the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) region. The Frankfurt region has been operational since 2014 and has undergone multiple expansions. In June 2024, AWS said it would invest $9.44 billion in its Frankfurt cloud region by 2026, and in November 2025, the company was reported to be developing data center sites outside Frankfurt in Schöneck and Maintal in the Hesse region, including a two-building campus stretching 26 acres in Maintal. The region currently operates three availability zones and, according to Baxtel, has four operating data center sites with one in progress. Amazon has not detailed how the remaining €11.2 billion ($12.58 billion) will be allocated among Amazon Leo, logistics, and Prime Video.
David Zapolsky, Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer, framed the investment as a vote of confidence in Germany's innovation ecosystem, stating that Germany is a hub of innovation and one of the most attractive investment opportunities in Europe, and that the company wants German businesses, communities, and creators to have the infrastructure and tools they need to compete and grow. Katherina Reiche, Germany's federal minister for economic affairs and energy, described the investment as a clear vote of confidence in Germany as a location for the future, noting that high-performance data centers are the foundation of the digital economy and that Germany has the potential to become a global leader in industrial AI. She added that these are exactly the kinds of investments needed to strengthen Germany's position in international technology competition and create value and jobs in the process.
The announcement also builds on AWS' existing Sovereign European Cloud initiative in Germany. In 2024, the company said it would invest €7.8 billion ($8.47 billion) in its sovereign cloud infrastructure in Germany through 2040, with that cloud based in Brandenburg. The expanded Frankfurt region and the broader €16 billion commitment signal that hyperscale investment in European data center capacity and AI infrastructure is accelerating, as cloud providers compete to meet rising demand for compute power and sovereign cloud services across the continent.
