Alibaba Cloud Launches First Public Cloud Region in the Netherlands with Two New Data Centers

By: IDCNOVARegion: Europe
Alibaba Cloud, the AI infrastructure arm and intelligence backbone of Alibaba Group, has opened its first public cloud region in the Netherlands, marking a significant expansion of its European footprint. The launch, announced in Amsterdam, centers on two new data centers designed to deliver robust infrastructure, lower latency and in-region data residency to both local and European customers. The move underscores the growing competition among global cloud providers to capture enterprise AI demand in Europe, where regulatory requirements around data localisation and sovereignty have made in-region infrastructure a prerequisite for many organizations.

The new region arrives alongside a suite of AI and cloud products aimed at meeting rising enterprise demand for artificial intelligence across Europe. Alibaba Cloud used the occasion to highlight a set of partnerships with European technology companies that are integrating its Qwen family of large language models into their platforms. JetBrains, the software development company, is working with Alibaba Cloud to explore integrating Qwen models to power Junie, its AI coding assistant, across both cloud and local scenarios. The collaboration is structured to give JetBrains and its developers strong cost-to-performance, early access to frontier Qwen models, and the flexibility to choose where models run — from in-region cloud to fully local, on-device setups.

Netherlands-based LLM platform orq.ai has partnered with Alibaba Cloud to integrate Qwen models into its hosted model garden, served natively from Alibaba Cloud's AI development platform Model Studio. The integration allows orq.ai's customers to access diversified cutting-edge generative AI while maintaining strict EU data localisation. Monks, a global digital-first marketing and technology services company headquartered in Amsterdam, is integrating Alibaba's latest generative AI models into Monks.Flow, its proprietary end-to-end AI marketing platform, through Alibaba Cloud Model Studio. By leveraging Alibaba Cloud's advanced AI capabilities, Monks aims to deliver ambitious creative assets faster, providing global brands with greater speed-to-market and flexible token optionality. The companies plan to expand the use of these models beyond content creation into wider marketing workflows, with Monks adopting Alibaba's latest AI models in the future.

Idea.ai, an Amsterdam-based digital design marketplace, has leveraged Alibaba's advanced AI models to power its next generation of generative media inside its platform, delivering high-quality, cost-competitive creative tools to its tens of millions of registered users. The two companies plan to deepen their collaboration across the full creative spectrum. The cluster of partnerships signals Alibaba Cloud's strategy of anchoring its European expansion not just on infrastructure but on an ecosystem of local AI applications and platforms built atop its models and cloud services.

The launch reflects a broader push by Alibaba Cloud to globalize its infrastructure and AI portfolio as enterprise adoption of generative AI accelerates. For European enterprises, the availability of a Netherlands-based region with in-region data residency addresses compliance concerns under EU data protection rules while reducing latency for workloads hosted locally. For Alibaba Cloud, the region strengthens its position against established cloud incumbents in a market where AI workloads are driving renewed infrastructure spending. The company has been steadily expanding its European presence, following the launch of a cloud region in France featuring two availability zones, and the Netherlands region adds another anchor point for customers across retail, software development, AI-powered creative platforms and other sectors seeking advanced cloud and AI capabilities within the bloc.
