The northeastern Japanese prefecture of Akita has unveiled plans to host one of the country's largest artificial intelligence data centers, a project with estimated construction costs of around 2 trillion yen ($12.7 billion). The facility, designed to support AI workloads, would have a power capacity of up to 500 megawatts, positioning it among the most significant digital infrastructure developments in Japan.
The initiative is being led by Akita-based IT firm S2 Co and U.S. startup Bitgrit, with financial backing expected from investors including the United Arab Emirates. The prefectural government and S2 have proposed an industrial park in the northern part of Akita City as the potential site. Operations are targeted to begin in the early 2030s, according to officials involved in the planning.
Akita Prefecture expects the facility to be powered by electricity generated from its abundant renewable energy sources, particularly wind power. The region has been investing in clean energy capacity, and the project aligns with broader efforts to attract high-tech industries to rural Japan while leveraging local energy resources.
The UAE's Mubadala Investment Co is reportedly considering investing in the project. The country's ambassador to Japan is scheduled to visit the prefecture on August 19 to meet with Akita Governor Kenta Suzuki, signaling deepening bilateral interest in the venture. If realized, the data center would mark a major step in Japan's push to expand its AI infrastructure and compete globally in digital services.
Industry observers note that the project underscores a growing trend of data center development in regions with strong renewable energy potential, as operators face increasing pressure to address the environmental impact of power-hungry AI systems. However, some local residents have raised concerns about water usage for cooling and the strain on existing energy supplies, highlighting the need for careful planning. The success of the Akita project could serve as a model for other prefectures seeking to attract large-scale digital investments while balancing sustainability goals.
