Cloud computing firm Akamai has signed a virtual Power Purchase Agreement (vPPA) with EDP Asia-Pacific, securing up to 13MW of power from a portfolio of rooftop solar arrays in Singapore. The agreement marks a significant step in Akamai's broader renewable energy strategy as the company seeks to match the rapid expansion of its distributed cloud infrastructure across Asia-Pacific with corresponding growth in clean energy procurement.
The power will be generated from a portfolio of rooftop solar projects spanning 27 locations across Singapore, with the potential to generate up to 17,000MWh annually. All of the sites are already operational, allowing Akamai to begin offtaking renewable energy immediately. The deal is part of Akamai's larger commitment to reach 100 percent renewable energy use and net-zero emissions by 2030.
Mike Mattera, director of corporate sustainability at Akamai, framed the agreement within the broader context of AI-driven infrastructure growth. "AI is accelerating demand for computing capacity, but the conversation cannot be only about adding more infrastructure. We also need to think about the energy required to support that growth," he said. "As Akamai expands its distributed cloud infrastructure across Asia-Pacific, we want renewable energy procurement to grow alongside it. Singapore is an important place to begin because it demonstrates how rooftop solar can contribute to renewable energy generation even in a highly urbanized country."
The companies said the deal also supports the Singaporean government's push to expand solar development under its Green Plan 2030, which seeks to leverage all available space, including rooftops, to increase renewable deployments in the country's land-constrained market. Singapore's limited land area has historically constrained utility-scale renewable energy development, making rooftop solar a critical component of its energy transition strategy.
Akamai, headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, specializes in cybersecurity, cloud computing, and content delivery network services. The company recently signed a seven-year $11.6 billion deal with Anthropic to lease compute to the AI firm, underscoring the growing energy demands of its expanding operations. EDP Renewables' APAC arm, which holds an installed capacity of approximately 1.5GW, is headquartered in Singapore and operates across nine countries in the region, including Vietnam, Singapore, China, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, and Thailand.
The agreement reflects a growing trend among technology companies to secure renewable energy through innovative procurement mechanisms such as vPPAs, particularly in markets where physical power purchase agreements face regulatory or logistical hurdles. For Akamai, the Singapore vPPA represents a template for how distributed cloud infrastructure can be powered sustainably in densely populated urban environments across the Asia-Pacific region.
