The single-phase immersion liquid cooling technology of "soaking servers in water" is becoming a new standard for green data centers.
On November 2, Hunan Malanshan Video Cultural and Creative Industrial Park, known as the "V Valley of China", reached cooperation with State Grid Hunan Electric Power, Hunan Siji, and Alibaba Cloud to jointly build a "duck shop" green low-carbon data center. This is also the first time that Alibaba Cloud data center liquid cooling technology has been exported to the outside world, and the total energy consumption of the built green low-carbon data center can be saved by 36%.
The Malanshan Video Cultural and Creative Industrial Park, known as the "base camp" of Hunan Radio and Television, is the first national-level radio and television industrial park and a demonstration base for the integration of national culture and technology. Since its establishment in 2017, Malanshan has gathered more than 3,000 video cultural and creative enterprises, and plans to achieve an annual output value of 100 billion yuan through construction in about five years.
With the continuous development of the scale of the park and the continuous increase in the demand for cloud access by companies in the park, the existing data center resources of the Malanshan Video Cultural and Creative Industrial Park have gradually become tense. In order to meet the requirements of high-performance, large-bandwidth, and mass storage of video cultural and creative enterprises, the Malanshan Management Committee put forward the requirement of power + computing power to build a new green data center.
Zou Benmiao, Secretary of the Party Working Committee of Malanshan (Changsha) Video Cultural and Creative Park, said: "Malanshan Video Cultural and Creative Industrial Park to build a green data center is actively responding to the national dual-carbon policy and starting in the high-energy-consuming field of data centers. Beneficial practice will also help Malanshan accelerate the completion of Changsha's first'net zero carbon' demonstration park, and further promote the integration of culture and technology.”
According to the agreement, the Management Committee of the Malanshan Video Cultural and Creative Industrial Park will jointly build a "Duck Shop" low-carbon green data center by the United Nations Network Hunan Electric Power, Hunan Siji, and Alibaba Cloud. The center will introduce Alibaba Cloud data center liquid cooling technology, which is expected to reduce heat dissipation energy consumption to close to zero and the average annual PUE (energy consumption ratio) of the liquid cooling zone to 1.09.
A related person in charge of Alibaba Cloud introduced that single-phase immersion liquid cooling technology is an advanced data center energy-saving technology. The server is immersed in insulating cooling liquid, and the heat generated can be directly absorbed by the cooling liquid into the outer circulation cooling, and the whole process is used for heat dissipation. The energy consumption is almost zero, effectively reducing the use of fans, air conditioners, and chillers. According to preliminary estimates, if all data centers across the country adopt liquid cooling technology, the annual electricity savings can be equivalent to two-thirds of the annual power generation of the Three Gorges Power Station in 2020.
This is also the first time that Alibaba Cloud has exported its data center liquid cooling technology. It is reported that Alibaba Cloud's data center in Hangzhou Renhe is the world's largest fully immersed liquid-cooled data center, which can save 70 million kWh of electricity each year that is enough to light up all street lights around West Lake for 8 years.
