How Baidu achieve this?
Located in the Yangquan Development Zone,Shanxi Province,Baidu Yangquan Cloud Computing Center occupies 24 hectares,which is the largest self-built data center of Baidu and one of the largest in Asia,holding 160,000 cabinets and integrating business of search engine,map,network disk,AI,intelligence park and automatic drive.As the first self-built hyper scale data center of Baidu,Yangquan Cloud Computing Center is completed after 7 years’construction,with over 4,000 PB of data storage,equals to more than 200,000 China National Library’s total volume of archives.
It’s widely known that the information storage relies on server.And it’s owing to hundreds of thousands of servers in the park thus enabling Baidu with such enormous information storage capacity.In other works,the so called security of data center is largely equals to the steady operation of servers.Quite lot of power consumption needed to maintain the cooling and steady operations of so many servers at high speed,which would exceed the total power consumption of a city with 300,000 residents if there is not any technical improvement for the data center.
AS of the energy consumption index PUE for data center,the international PUE standard is 1.7 according to TGG,the PUE is basically reaching 1.73 for newly-built data centers in China.In 2017,the single module PUE in the Baidu Yangquan Cloud Computing Center had reached by 1.10.its total annual power conservation of 250 million kwh after completion equals to the total power consumption of 130,000 households annually.
As a natural cooling hyperscale data center,Baidu Yangquan Cloud Computing Center achieved 96%of natural cooling through the whole year freely,that is to say,only 2 weeks of cooling machine needed in a year.And Baidu Yangquan Cloud Computing Center become the only data center in China winning dual 5A authentications from Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and TGG in terms of green data center design and operations.
Pathway to green data center
As a city emerged from coal industry,60%to 70%of residents in Yangquan City earned their livings relying on coal mining and related industries before,actually coal mining is still the dominant industry at present.As one crucial factor,the low pricing of coal electricity attracts Baidu to open its cloud computing center here.But Baidu didn’t consume power energy for granted but conducting continual innovation to lift PUE as well as introducing multiple clean energy to achieve energy saving and emission and reductions.
As one of the first built-in lithium battery,Baidu Yangquan Cloud Computing Center completely removed the allocation of UPS and lead-acid battery and saved 25%of the server room space,meanwhile it applied four architects of AC+UPS,AC+UPS(ECO)mode,AC+HVDC online and AC+HVDC offline.And the AC+HVDC offline power supply is firstly applied in the world,which enables the power efficiency greatly from 90%by the traditional 2N redundancy UPS dual circuit type to 99.5%,utilizing resource at maximum.
As the first data center applying photovoltaic power generation in China,Baidu Yangquan Cloud Computing Center make the best of free space on the roof to install solar panels.Meanwhile,it also introduced wind power.In 2017,the total amount of signed wind power and solar power reached 26 million kwh,accounting for 16%of the total power demand.By 2018,this amount for wind power and solar could increase to 55 million kwh,accounting for 23%。
Another energy-saving optimization of Baidu Yangquan Cloud Computing Center is the heating and ventilation part.By its self-developed technology to make the most of natural cooling source and optimize machinery cooling,pre-cooling and natural cooling,the free level for cooling annually reaches by 96%.Moreover,Baidu Yangquan Cloud Computing Center adopts waste water recycling and reusing,after the completion of this system,the amount of water recycled could reach by 48 tons of water,equivalent to those of 4,000 households a year.
