Prince William County Fire and Rescue dispatched to scene
A QTS data center just outside of Manassas, Virginia, has been hit with a major gas leak.
As reported by local news outlets includingPotomac LocalandDC News Now, the gas leak was reported at 2:10pm local time, and Prince William County Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the facility at 9540 Godwin Drive.
According to Fire and Rescue spokesman Matt Smolsky, the leak impacted an 8-inch gas line, noting that it "takes time to isolate and secure leaks of that size."
Details about what caused the leak have not been shared. DCD has contacted QTS and the Prince William County Fire and Rescue department for further information.
According to reports, there are currently no known injuries or evacuations associated with the leak. Traffic has been impacted on nearby roads including Route 28,Freedom Center Boulevard, and Rixlew Lane.
QTS' Manassas campus currently has three data centers operating, with a further three planned. The site is expected to eventually offer more than 190MW of critical capacity.
The three existing data centers are, according to the company's website, located at 9400 and 9420 Godwin Drive and 9301 Freedom Center Boulevard.
The upcoming three list their location as "TBD," suggesting that the leak has perhaps occurred at a data center currently under development.
Toward the end of last month, QTS' founder and CEO Chad Williams announced he was leaving the company after 20 years at the helm.
The data center company was founded in Kansas City in 2003, and still maintains its original data center at its Overland Park headquarters in the city. Running since 2003, it has 200kW of power.
The company has scaled up significantly since then, with its growth accelerating after it was acquired by Blackstone in 2021 for $10 billion. It now operates facilities across the US and around the world.
