Iron Mountain appoints Gary Aitkenhead as EVP and GM of data centers

Iron Mountain has appointed Gary Aitkenhead as the company's executive vice president and general manager of data centers.

Aitkenhead joins from Equinix, having served as SVP of operations in EMEA at the colo provider since April 2021.

In his new role at Iron Mountain, Aitkenhead will lead commercial and operational activities for Iron Mountain's data center business, reporting to Mark Kidd - EVP and GM of asset lifecycle management and data centers.

William Meaney, president and CEO of Iron Mountain, said: “We are pleased to welcome Gary to Iron Mountain. His global commercial and operational experience, alongside extensive data center expertise, will be instrumental in advancing our commitment to providing safe, secure, and innovative solutions for our customers.”

Aitkenhead added: “I’m honored to join Iron Mountain at a pivotal time in the data center industry. As demand for capacity rises, Iron Mountain is well-positioned to scale. I look forward to delivering value as our customers advance, driving growth, and contributing to the company’s continued success.”

Prior to working at Equinix, Aitkenhead held roles at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, Sepura PLC, and Motorola Solutions. He is a chartered engineer and a fellow of both the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Earlier this month, Iron Mountain took ownership of Indian data center firm WebWerks, thus acquiring six data centers in the country.

During the company's most recent earnings call, Iron Mountain's data center unit posted a revenue of $620 million for 2024, up 25 percent from 2023.
