Microsoft to invest $7.16bn in new data centers in Aragon, S

Microsoft is planning to invest €6.69 billion ($7.16bn) in developing new data centers in the northeastern region of Aragon, Spain. The investment is expected to span the next 10 year.

The regional government of Aragon has said that Microsoft filed for a construction permit to build data centers outside of the city of Zaragoza, plans which were first reported by El Heraldo.

According to El Heraldo's report, the data center campus will span 80 hectares. “Microsoft’s new data center region will provide cutting-edge, sustainable, and secure AI solutions for Spain and the rest of Europe,” Spain’s Minister for Digital Transformation, José Luis Escrivá, said

“It is a great satisfaction that Microsoft is once again betting on Spain for the deployment of state-of-the-art infrastructure and services, thus contributing to the positioning of our country at the forefront of digital transformation,” he addeed

The site in question is in the Villamayor de Gállego, next to a large agri-food logistics complex being developed by Costa Group. The project is hoped to bring 900 jobs to the area.

Microsoft first shared plans for a cloud region in Aragon in October 2023. This latest announcement follows Microsoft's launch of its Madrid cloud region - Spain Central which was part of the company's commitment to invest $2.1 billion in Spain between 2024 and 2025. That cloud region was developed in partnership with 5 Telefónica.

Google was the first hyperscaler to launch a Spanish region, opening in May 2022 with a region in Madrid.

Amazon launched an Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud region in Aragon that November; reportedly also around Zaragoza in the Huesca Logistics Platform, in Villanueva de Gállego, and in El Burgo de Ebro. In May 2024, AWS announced it would invest €15.7 billion ($17bn) in expanding its Aragon region, with support from the local government.

Oracle opened a Madrid region in September with plans for a second in the works. Both Google and Oracle’s regions were also developed in partnership  with Telefonica
