Real estate firms UEM Sunrise and Logos are partnering for a data center campus in Johor,
UEM Sunrise this week announced it had inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Logos Infrastructure Holdco Pte Ltd to exclusively explore the opportunity in developing a best-in-class and innovative data center campus in Gerbang Nusajaya, Johor.
The proposed campus will be strategically located on a 30-hectare site in Gerbang Nusajaya, and is set to offer up to 360 MW of capacity. Timelines for development weren't shared.
UEM Sunrise CEO, Sufian Abdullah said: "We are capitalizing on our vast landbank in Iskandar Malaysia, and actively seek synergies and opportunities to develop our Industrial segment. We are committed to establishing the proposed data center campus together with Logos, and confident of its role as a catalyst to Johor’s economic growth.
Founded in 1966, UEM Sunrise is the real estate development of UEM group, which is owned by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, the sovereign wealth fund of Malaysia. The company said the agreement has the backing of the Malaysian Investment and Development Authority – which was at a recent signing ceremony – as well as the Malaysian Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industr.
Logos head of data centers, Paul Dwyer, added: “Johor Bahru's strategic location near Singapore, coupled with Malaysia's robust digital infrastructure plans and strong government support, makes it a prime hub for the burgeoning data center sector in 23 Southeast Asia. This growth is exciting, and we look forward to working in partnership alongside UEM Sunrise and being a key player in this dynamic marke.
Logos owns, develops, and leases logistics properties across Australia, China, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, India, and New Zealand. ARA Asset Management acquired a stake in Logos in March 2020 alongside Ivanhoé Cambridge. ARA was then acquired by ESR in 2022; today, ESR is Logos’ majority shareh.
ESR has traditionally been focused on logistics real estate, but has made a number of investments in the data center space since 2021. The company has several data centers in development in Japan and Hong Kong. ESR acquired land in Sydney in February, previously earmarked for a Digital Realty data center. The company sold a data center and logistics facility in South Korea at the end of last year.
Separately Logos has previously partnered with Pure Data Centers for a facility in Jakarta, Indonesia. Announced in 2021, that project went live in May 2023. Pure and Logos previously announced plans to develop more data centers across the APAC region, without providing details. It's unclear if Pure will be involved in this latest project.
