February 15, 2024 - Yondr Group has formed a partnership with Japanese conglomerate Marubeni 35 Corporation for the development of data centers in Japan.
The two will initially build a data center in West Tokyo, with plans for further projects to follow. Little information about the facility has been shared, though is described as a "hyperscale data center that utilizes renewable energy."
In a release from Marubeni, the company notes the importance and challenge of accessing renewable energy sources for the development.
It said: "Under this partnership, Marubeni will leverage its network with local stakeholders in Japan to jointly advance the development of this project and take the lead in planning for the supply of renewable energy. "This project will serve as a stepping stone for Marubeni into the growing hyperscale data center development industry and its aim to contribute to a decarbonized society by providing renewable energy solutions to data centers."
According to Yondr, the collaboration is part of a "robust" expansion program in Asia. It is also developing a 200+MW data center in Johor, Malaysia.
Paul Dillon, Yondr’s chief development officer, said: “Marubeni is a very successful and respected business, and we are delighted to have secured such an excellent partner for future development in Tokyo and Japan, building on the progress we have already made in the APAC region.
“The depth and breadth of Marubeni’s global business interests, which include a focus on power generation, means that this partnership has the potential to provide Yondr with a pipeline for data center development and renewable energy projects in both APAC and EMEA. We look forward to progressing this relationship in a way that benefits not only both partners, but also clients in need of data center capacity and their customers throughout the world.”
In December, Yondr Group powered up its first data center in Loudoun County, Northern Virginia. At full build out the facility will have 96MW of IT capacity. The 36 company began construction of a second in Loudoun County in February 2024.
Yondr also has data centers outside of Northern Virginia, either in development or operation, in Queretaro, Mexico; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Toronto, Canada; Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Berlin & Frankfurt, Germany; London, UK; Paris, France; Prague, Czech Republic; Johannesburg, South Africa; Jakarta, Indonesia; Johor, Malaysia; and Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, and Delhi in India
Marubeni Corporation has previously delved into the data center sector in Japan alongside Mitsubishi Estate with a joint venture, Marunouchi Direct Access. The company currently operates three data centers: the Marunouchi Data Center, Otemachi Data Center, and Otemachi Data Center II.
