2023-12-08 - YTL Power International revealed on Friday that it will collaborate with GPU chip maker Nvidia to build an AI data centre in Malaysia by the middle of next year.
Under the deal, YTL and Nvidia will build an AI infrastructure in YTL’s 500-MW Green Data Center Park in Kulai, Johor. YTL’s telecoms arm, YTL Communications (which offers 4G and 5G services under the “Yes” brand), will own and manage it.
YTL said in a statement that the project will provide energy-efficient AI infrastructure to scientists, developers and startups in Malaysia. It will also enable YTL to create AI-powered apps and services for its customers.
YTL said it will deploy Nvidia’s H100 Tensor Core GPUs, which it says can speed up large language models (LLMs) by 30X compared to previous-generation GPUs.
The infrastructure will also use Nvidia’s AI Enterprise software to streamline production AI. That includes Nvidia NeMo, “an end-to-end, cloud-native framework for building, customising, and deploying generative AI models from anywhere.”
According to The Edge Malaysia, YTL intends to use NeMo to “customise and deploy a Malay language foundation model that will be sensitive to Malaysia’s multicultural heritage.”
YTL Power managing director Yeoh Seok Hong said the AI data centre will serve as a platform to drive Malaysia’s digital economy ambitions with new solutions and apps using home-grown LLMs, the report said.
The first phase of the AI data centre is scheduled to kick off by the middle of 2024.
