July 4, 2023 - Brazilian data centre and digital infrastructure group V.tal has acquired a plot of land in Fortaleza in Ceara, a state in the northeast of the country, for what is expected to be its first hyperscale data centre.
The BNamericas website explains that the facility, which will have capacity of 20MW, is called Mega Lobster. It will be integrated into the company's submarine cable landing station and to its edge data centre Big Lobster, also in Fortaleza.
Big Lobster was opened in February. A press announcement at the time said it will operate with a capacity of 4MW and will have four data halls with space to accommodate 400 racks.
Information about the much larger new arrival – such as size, cost or completion date – is not yet available, though, like the existing sites, Mega Lobster will rely on V.tal's terrestrial fibre grid to connect to a neutral ecosystem, offering operators, ISPs and OTTs solutions to access Ceará's central PIX (internet exchange point), which already registers the second highest volume of internet traffic in Brazil.
V.tal describes itself as one of the largest end-to-end neutral digital infrastructure solutions companies, with operations in Brazil and five other countries in South and North America. In addition to Fortaleza, the group currently operates data centres in Rio de Janeiro and Barranquilla, Colombia.
