On June 22, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the economic operation of the communications industry from January to May 2022. It mentioned that as of the end of May, the total number of 5G base stations reached 1.7 million, accounting for 16.7% of the total number of mobile base stations, an increase of 2.4 percentage points from the end of the previous year. Among them, 275,000 5G base stations were newly built from January to May.
In terms of regional development, the construction and penetration rate of 5G base stations in the eastern region are leading. As of the end of May, the number of 5G base stations in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions reached 831,000, 347,000, 412,000 and 110,000 respectively. accounting for 18.7%, 15.7%, 14.4%, and 16% of the total number of mobile phone base stations in the region. 5G mobile phone users reached 192.03 million, 98.98 million, 109.44 million and 27.74 million respectively, accounting for 26.6%, 25.8%, 24.9% and 23.5% of the total number of mobile phone users in the region.
